Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas
In September 2017, the island was hit by two category 5 hurricanes, Irma and Maria, within one week of each other. The damage was so extensive the resort had to be closed for over two years. Tourism on the island collapsed overnight, devastating the local economy. At that time, the potential for full economic recovery and the speed at which it could happen was highly uncertain. It was in this atmosphere the Owners chose to not only rebuild the resort, but to also spend an additional $20 million on enhancements, such as an elaborate kid’s pool, resulting in a family – friendly luxury resort.
Diverse cultures and stories form early Danish settlement play a significant part in the design inspiration for the Ritz Carlton St. Thomas. Serving as a large trading post to the surrounding islands, St. Thomas’ economy was founded on the import and export trades. The aptly named “Customs House” lobby acknowledges this, welcoming guests who venture in search of luxurious relaxation.
The interior architecture and design solutions subtly reference the rich culture and history of the island. Celebrating this narrative, the soft colors and contextual materials create a constant, seamless transition from exterior to interior. There is no doubt as one wanders the spaces of the entire resort, the views to the exterior are the star.
Alloro, the resorts’ premier restaurant, has an aesthetic that is defined by a clean white palette echoing the white cliffs of Southern Sicily and sparkling beaches of St. Thomas. Modern shutters speak to the authentic provincial life of both islands’ cultures, allowing the space to open up completely to the ocean views. Herringbone stone floor is used throughout the bar and main dining, accented by Mediterranean blue Havana tiles at the entryway.
Drawing inspiration from St. Thomas’ blue ocean waters and the coral color of the conch shell, the color palette throughout the resort exudes elegant island aesthetic. Light ivory and accents of pale grey and coral continue from the public areas into the guestrooms providing a tranquil retreat from the heat of the island.
Within the guestrooms, white marble floors, cerused white wood millwork and natural walnut accents create the room’s envelope. Other design details such as the metal campaign-style hardware and end brackets echo the Lobby’s detailing. The dresser attaches to a full-height millwork wall creating a seamless unit supporting the cantilevered live-edge desk top. In the bathroom, floor-to-ceiling, book matched, large format marble is installed behind the oversized freestanding tub. Two Presidential suites, each with a unique design have their own sense of style.

Renaissance Nashville
Project Description
Due to emerging high-end competition spurred by the new site-adjacent, $400 million Fifth + Broadway development under construction in downtown Nashville, Renaissance Hotel was primed for upgrades. They were also eager to capitalize on having gained additional square footage for their conference center that would connect to Fifth + Broadway through a complex phased addition and renovation. To build upon recent guest room and Bridge Bar renovations, the design team was tasked with reimagining a 1985-era space into a holistic hotel experience. All common areas needed to flow seamlessly, from the conference center, meeting rooms, and grand ballroom to the hotel lobby and food and beverages venue. The client's primary goal was to embrace refined sophistication with a nod to Nashville's renowned music scene.
The conference center and hotel common areas were an eight-phased extensive remodel with new monumental stairs, new bars and casual gathering spaces throughout. The spaces were essentially gutted to recreate a seamless sense of arrival beginning at check-in and moving through the market, restaurant/lounge and tower meeting rooms. The dark lobby needed to be modern, sleek and inviting. The restaurant, caught in the era of utilitarian "hotel restaurants", needed to become a seamless lounge/dining/bar experience. The interior architecture and design solution is an extension of the local culture and lifestyle to which Renaissance Hotel guests are accustomed. Three brand guiding design activators would define our design team's approach: intriguing (engaging all the senses), indigenous (appreciative of local authenticity), and independent (rewarding wanderlust and exploration).
- Demolishing several commercial escalators and creating an interactive stair in the conference center and lobby, completely transforming connectivity
- Adding new restrooms
- Creating visual separations in the lounge/dining areas through the use of belts/buckles, shipping containers, and metal chain drapery features in lieu of doors
- Converting the dated hotel/restaurant into a lounge/bar with multiple dining niches, adaptable to all dayparts
- Converting a dark room into an upscale private dining room that doubles as a full breakfast/brunch servery seamlessly
- Converting a luggage room and escalator into a main lobby Starbuck's Market including a prep kitchen, in lieu of a lobby counter Starbucks
- Upgrading three floors of pre-function, meeting space and restrooms
- Introducing design features with many unexpected details like wall swing benches, a gold denim wall sculpture, braided ropes sculptures, custom retro microphone sconces, and a rotating wood-block art installation. "Little Fib" purposefully feels more like a local hangout than a typical brand hotel restaurant, creating an experience on par with the city's elite dining spots.
